David Branch OHL Death, The Western Hockey League mourns loss

The Western Hockey League has shared heartfelt reflections honoring the life and legacy of David Branch, the former Commissioner of the Ontario Hockey League and longtime President of the Canadian Hockey League, whose influence helped shape major junior hockey across Canada and beyond. His departure has been met with deep emotion throughout the hockey world, where his leadership, vision, and dedication left an enduring mark.

Dan Near, Commissioner of the Western Hockey League, expressed profound sadness while recognizing David Branch as a central figure in uniting and strengthening the CHL’s three member leagues — the WHL, OHL, and Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League. Through decades of service, Branch played a critical role in building major junior hockey into a respected, player-focused system. His passion for the game and genuine concern for athletes were cornerstones of his work, setting standards that continue to guide the sport today.

Bruce Hamilton, Chairman of the WHL Board of Governors, also reflected on nearly half a century of Branch’s leadership within the Ontario Hockey League. Having worked closely with him for more than two decades, Hamilton described Branch as a fierce and committed leader whose drive helped push the game forward both on and off the ice. The positive effects of his decisions and vision are visible from coast to coast, impacting leagues, teams, and players across Canada and the United States. Hamilton emphasized the deep respect Branch earned throughout his career and the gratitude felt by those who had the opportunity to work alongside him.

Ron Robison, WHL Executive Advisor and former WHL Commissioner, highlighted Branch’s transformational role within Canadian hockey. Over more than four decades, Branch helped build the OHL and CHL into the world’s premier development systems for junior hockey players. He stood at the forefront of many landmark achievements, including positioning the CHL as the leading supplier of talent to the National Hockey League. His influence extended to the creation of Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence, the successful hosting of World Junior Championships in Canada, and the implementation of progressive player safety measures and scholarship initiatives.

Robison noted that throughout complex and often challenging moments in the sport, Branch consistently made decisions grounded in what was best for players and for hockey as a whole. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was remembered as a trusted mentor and close friend, deeply respected across the hockey community. The WHL and its member clubs benefitted greatly from his leadership and guidance over many years.

The WHL and its Board of Governors have extended their thoughts and condolences to David Branch’s family, including his partner Patsy, his sons Barclay, Kyle, and Wade, and his grandchildren, as they reflect on a life devoted entirely to the game of hockey.

As an organization, the Western Hockey League continues its mission as one of the world’s finest development leagues for junior players. Based in Calgary, Alberta, the WHL is comprised of 23 member clubs across Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. For more than 50 years, it has been a leading pipeline to the NHL and a major provider of post-secondary scholarships, while forming the foundation of Canada’s National Junior Hockey Team each season.

David Branch’s influence remains woven into every level of major junior hockey, reflected in stronger leagues, safer environments, and generations of players whose paths were shaped by his leadership.
